Cardano is on the verge of a transformative milestone for the blockchain, with the Chang hard fork now hours away. Intersect, Cardano’s off-chain forum and discussion hub, confirmed the activation date for the first phase of the technical upgrade this week.
The Chang hard fork marks a major step towards Cardano's full decentralization. As the community becomes more involved in decision-making, Cardano's future will be shaped by its members.
It was only last week that Intersect formalized the announcement that Cardano would begin the Chang hard fork process. The organization has played a crucial role in uniting the Cardano community and fostering a more resilient and innovative ecosystem. By facilitating discussions and building consensus, Intersect has not only helped ensure that the Cardano community is prepared for the Chang hard fork, but is also responsible for overseeing its successful implementation.
The first phase of the hard fork, known as the Chang #1, will begin today, Sunday September 1st, at 21:45 UTC. This first period marks the start of the technical bootstrapping process, paving the way for Cardano’s future developments. A working group has been diligently preparing for this moment over the past 10 weeks. They have reviewed progress, addressed necessary requirements, and ensured the ecosystem is ready for the transition. This will be the final major preparation organized by a third party before ADA holders gain full control over Cardano's governance.
The Chang hard fork marks a significant step towards Cardano's full decentralization. This milestone brings the Voltaire era, the final stage of Cardano's development, into effect. The upgrade is named in honor of Phil Chang, an early leader in Cardano governance at Cardano developers Input | Output, who passed away in 2022. His contributions were instrumental in shaping the design of the Voltaire era.
In approximately 90 days, Cardano will enter the second phase of the hard fork, known as Chang #2, following approval from the Interim Constitutional Committee (ICC) and Stake Pool Operators (SPOs). Like the first, this phase will also mark a significant transition as the community gains more control over Cardano's governance. These enhancements will move past the initial bootstrapping period and enable the Cardano community to actively participate in decision-making and shape the future of the network.
In this phase, Cardano will introduce advanced governance features, including the role of delegate representatives (DReps) and tools for community participation. These features will empower the community to play a more active role in decision-making, fully transitioning Cardano to a community-driven model.
After the completion of Chang upgrade #1, DReps can begin registering on the mainnet and gathering delegations in preparation for the second phase of the upgrade. Stay tuned for updates on Intersect's website for more information about this final transition, now only hours away.
